Black Stallion Literacy Program: Dian Deal
Dian Deal & a friend went to Fort Worth to the teachers/media event seminar. There were only TWO people who showed up … Dian & her friend.
1st Grade Level: reads “Little Black, A Pony” and gets a field trip to a horse farm where they meet the horses from the book, learn more about the care of horses, and then individually read aloud to the horses. We could also arrange to take horses to the schools for children to visit with.
4th Grade Level: reads “Black Stallion” and gets video tape of the 1979 film starring Cass Ole. They also get to see a special presentation of the Arabian Nights show. Curriculum for teachers is provided as part of the study package. This brings in elements of math, geography, etc., as well as reading.
Target area – San Antonio, Tx. in 2008.
Need specific site: indoor arena Freeman Colliseum – Larry Shallcross to look into costs and dates: middle of the week during school hours (need 5,000 kids). Funds of approximately $40,000.00.
Much discussion generated on this topic as San Antonio and AAHA have a special connection to this program because Cass Ole was from San Antonio and many of the longer term AAHA members remember him & his family. This is a huge project to take on & suggestion was to e-blast members to ask their opinion if this is the direction they would like the club to take.
Meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Next meeting November 6, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at
Chester Hamburgers at 281 North & 1000 Oaks.
